Disturbs the sleep.
It stirs the brain like silt from a riverbed.
Thoughts and images rise as bubbles, murky, then shimmering, bursting crystal upon the surface.
How will tomorrow be?
Was there a container of whipped of cream with that last cobbler?
Have I forgotten someone, something?
Memories flicker against the wall like silent movies.
Years ago, the old Brown Dog on the last day, the last hour, the last too few minutes of his time here with us.
He turns away down the hall, bloated with cancer, seeking refuge, where there has always been refuge, the wicker bed, a soft quilt with the scent of his departed mate, our bedroom deep in the house.
A moment passes, the picture fades.
To be replaced by Bill, the ukulele guy.
It was just a small dinner party among friends down a dusty road, curious of the “Chef” come to cook, a soft, magical evening of piano, jug wine in coffee cups culminating in a raucous ukulele kitchen serenade.
There was a blessed joy in the moment and sweet laughter over the canyon as the sun settled into evening.
We miss him.
Him and his Garage Ma Hall.
